Chyulu Hills

Hemingway's 'green hills of Africa' sit in the shadow of Kilimanjaro (and serve up some of the best views of it, especially at dawn and dusk). And, along with Amboseli, the region is famous for its large-tusk elephants, as well as regular sightings of wildebeest, zebras and lions.

Many of the lodges have strong links with Maasai villages and work with them to protect wildlife and improve lives. Safaris aside, the lodges usually offer lots of things to do including horse-riding, hiking and community visits. Take the time to head south, and you’ve got a perfect introductory trip to Kenya.

Places to stay

  • Ol Donyo Lodge

    Chyulu Hills

Ol Donyo is one of our favourite lodges in east Africa. It’s in the Chyulu Hills, the range Ernest Hemingway...

We recommend flying into Nairobi then a transfer to Wilson airport for a light aircraft flight to the local airstrip.

A year round destination, however the best months for game viewing are July to October when water is hard to find and animals are drawn to the waterholes. From November onwards, migratory birds arrive with the rains.
