Mauritius - Beyond the Beach

Mauritius - Beyond the Beach

After a trip to Africa, our guess is that you are flying to Mauritius to relax. However, different people have different ways of chilling out. Mauritius certainly has a host of things to do if you need entertaining beyond a pool lounger and good book.

With a melting pot of cultures, it will come as no surprise that Mauritius has a multitude of different foods to choose from. I had lunch at Kot Marie Michelle. Here I got to experience real Mauritian Creole cooking, which was not dissimilar to Cape Malay cooking. The tastes were delicious and it was great to experience real authentic Mauritian hospitality.

Perhaps, like me, spend the morning in a food market in St Louis, were I got to marvel at the vanilla, tropical fruits, local vegetables and breathe in the heady smell of coriander and spices.

As a rule if an island produces sugar, they will produce rum. The Chamarel Distillery is probably their most famous, and does a fantastic rum tasting. You can combine a trip here with a trip through the Black River Mountains in the centre of the island, stopping off at the sacred lake Grand Bassin, the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel and the Waterfalls

No matter where you stay on the island you are never very far from a world class 18-hole golf course. The Ile Aux Cerf golf course is located on a small island, its narrow fairways and scenic greens are a sharp contrast to the wider fairways at nearby Four Seasons Anahita. Some fantastic holiday golf can be enjoyed in Mauritius.

For some people the biggest adventure can be deciding on what flavour of ice cream to try after lunch by the pool. For other people it entails kite surfing, diving, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, seakarting, seakayaking and zip lining. Mauritius has oodles of these, and with the island only being 65km long and 45km wide you never have very far to travel.

Your Holiday
The Knighton Reeve representatives in Mauritius totally understand what makes a great holiday and how it can vary from guest to guest. When you arrive on the island, they are able to create individual activities for you, allowing you to enjoy your holiday at your own pace. If this is nothing more than pointing you in the direction of the pool, then their job is done, but they're also on hand for those looking to be more active and discover more of this vibrant island.
