A Taste of the High Life

Enjoy a taste of the High Life

As part of my recent trip to Kenya I was lucky enough to enjoy a taste of the high life on one of Elewana’s SkySafari circuits. Operating 3 different routings – 2 in Kenya and 1 in Tanzania – these trips are designed for clients to maximise their time in the various National Parks, whilst travelling in style between them.

It was something I had always had my eye on and have booked several times for clients, so I jumped at the opportunity, eager to see how it measured up to my expectations.

How to fly sideways - and watch game

The central theme of all 3 itineraries is the “how”. In this case, how you get around is by the executive class Cessna caravan. Seasoned safari goers will be used to these workhorse aircraft, which spend their days ferrying clients, supplies and staff to even the most remote corners of the African bush.

But this is no ordinary aircraft.

Taking a maximum of 9 passengers, each aircraft has had its interior styled to suit the discerning traveller. Standard aircraft seats have been replaced with extra wide, super comfy leather chairs, which not only have a substantial recline, but can also twist and move around such that if you want to fly sideways, staring directly out of the window at the game below, then you can do so.

The WOW factor safari

Although carrying a maximum of 9 guests, it is worth noting only 6 of the seats have this full functionality. The two rear seats (whilst still spacious and comfortable) are static, and the final seat is up front. Whilst that one doesn’t have the recline, it has its own wow factor as you get to co-pilot, and pretend you know what you are looking at from the myriad of information before you!

It is always a popular choice, so really we are talking 7 out of the 9 seats being optimal. SkySafari will rotate guests around the seats when a flight is full, so nobody would need to sit at the rear for more than one short flight, but it is very rare to have more than 7 on any flight so this is seldom a problem.

More time on safari - and at leisure

The reason it is not often full lies in the flexibility this approach offers, and must not be seen as a negative. Because whilst the circuit order is fixed, the fact that the aircraft constantly fly the same routings means this is beautifully simple in its design.

You can begin every other day of the year on a SkySafari circuit from Nairobi  in Kenya, or Arusha in Tanzania, and as your trip is guaranteed with a minimum of 2 guests then as long as there is room at the next camp, you know you will have your own air taxi to get you to your next adventure.

This is the second key point about the structure of the trips. Not everyone is aware that standard “fly-in” safari’s will often involve multiple stops en-route, as providers look to maximise their load capacities. The beauty of flying direct between your camps should not be underestimated. More time for you both on safari and at leisure, and for any nervous flyers the fewer take off and landings the better.

Where can you find some of the best game viewing in East Africa?

All 3 circuits offer some of the best game viewing East Africa has to offer. From the “endless Plains” of the Serengeti (with two seasonal camp locations meaning you are always in the thick of the action), through the sheer spectacle of the world heritage site at Ngorongoro Crater, to the vintage charm of Sand River located in a quiet, secluded corner of the Masai Mara, the game will never disappoint.

Those looking for activities such as fishing, mountain biking or camel treks will love the diversity of the Loisaba conservancy, and the romantics will rejoice in the tranquillity of Elsa’s Kopje or the beauty of the backdrop at Amboseli where Kilimanjaro towers over the skyline on a clear day. Expect expert guiding in custom built vehicles every step of the way. And if it all gets a bit too much, most properties offer SkySafari guests a complimentary massage as well.

Choose an air safari for ease & exclusivity

Elewana really have hit on a clever combination with their SkySafari programmes – creating an air of ease and exclusivity, but ensuring there is something for everyone on all their flying circuits.

Whether you choose Kenya or Tanzania for your next adventure, the memories will last a lifetime.
