Where to stay on a Luxury Travel holiday in Mozambique?
Turquoise seas. White, sandy beaches. Picture perfect views of the Indian Ocean. If you asked any savvy traveller to identify the destination you'd be fairly confident of the answer right? But we think a large proportion of guesses may have missed the target, and perhaps there is a relatively undiscovered gem that needs to be on your radar…
An Indian Ocean Gem
Seychelles. Maldives. Mauritius. For many people, these are the 3 destinations that will have sprung to mind. All fabulous in their own right, and worthy guesses. But the answer we are looking for here is beautiful Mozambique. Yep, located in south-eastern Africa, this former Portuguese colony has some of the most breath-taking coastlines imaginable. We’ve seen an incredible increase in travellers requesting this idyllic spot and we think it’s time to share why.
Idyllic Beach Escape
We would sum up Mozambique as a beach choice in 2 words – barefoot escapism. It is true that large parts of the country are underdeveloped, but when it comes to the beach resorts they more than hold their own against more glamourous rivals. Those willing to indulge their wanderlust and get off the beaten track can be rewarded with gorgeous, uncrowded coastlines that cannot help but soothe the soul. The pace of life is so far removed from the typical hustle and bustle, but there are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, if you can tear your gaze away from the glistening, coral fringed waters that is.
Mozambique for Honeymooners
Two of our favourite properties – which always go down well with honeymoon couples – are &Beyond Benguerra Island and Azura Benguerra.
&Beyond Benguerra Island and Azura Benguerra, Bazaruto Archipelago National Park
Situated in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, which was set up to protect the habitat of dugong and marine turtles, Benguerra is also home to an astonishing array of flora, fauna and birdlife for a small island. Just a short helicopter flight from Vilanculos, you can while away your days with a range of unique experiences such as snorkelling, scuba diving, horse-riding and deep sea fishing. Relax in the spa to let those aches and pains slip away, or spend lazy days on the shimmering sand. Why not follow this with a private beach dinner surrounded by candlelight as the stars come out to shine, or watch the sunset over the dreamy horizon on a traditional dhow cruise? We think it beats the evening commute every day of the week.
Santorini, Mozambique
If you want a splash of local culture alongside your R&R, then sophisticated Santorini could be just the place for you. The dazzling white walls and blue domed rooves pay obvious homage to the Greek inspiration for this boutique property, perched on the cliffs above Kingfisher Bay. After a day playing in the ocean in a kayak or paddle boarding, you do have to head up the wooden steps from beach to the property, but the panoramic views from the top are a glorious reward. The food is pretty special too. But as well as being able to access the Bazaruto Marine Park, being on the mainland allows you to explore the colourful local markets in nearby Vilanculos too. With 5 individual suites plus both a 2 and 3 bedroom villa option, Santorini caters effortlessly for couples, groups of friends and extended families.
White Pearl Resorts
Further south, near the border with South Africa, beach house meets bush at White Pearl Resorts. A contemporary, stylish jewel, we’d challenge anyone not to feel the stresses simply melt away here. In addition to the stunning beach and its myriad of activities, this is a stretch of coastline which is also home to resident dolphins and migratory whales. But perhaps the most inspiring natural wonder of all is the turtles, who return each year to lay their eggs along this protected shoreline. Witnessing the nesting of endangered species is a magnificent reward for those willing to risk the chance of higher rainfall during the southern hemisphere summer.
When is the best time to visit Mozambique?
The best time to visit Mozambique depends on your requirements, particularly with regards to the wildlife, but for sun worshippers the dry season runs from April to October. The days may be cooler comparatively, but we think mid 20’s is perfect beach weather for those of us more used to the UK climate. July and August may be breeziest, but this is ideal to enjoy some water sports such as kitesurfing. Temperature and rainfall increase during November and December, but it’s only really January to March we’d typically avoid, unless it is those turtles you are interested in.
How to travel to Mozambique?
With easy access via Johannesburg, Mozambique offers a spectacular beach holiday in its own right. But throw in easy safari connections – you can fly direct from parts of the Kruger National Park – and suddenly that ultra-desirable bush and beach combo looks even better, without the compulsory night in Johannesburg that the more established Indian Ocean destinations require. Imagine waking up to the sound of lions roaring in South Africa, then that same day falling asleep to the waves lapping the sparkling shore of your new home, and you can see why we love magical Mozambique.
