Golf in South Africa

Our Favourite Golf Courses

Golf in South Africa

South Africa makes the perfect golf destination. We have put together some of our favourite courses and where to stay when playing golf.

Cape Town

You can essentially stay anywhere in Cape Town and play these courses. They are about 20 – 35 minutes drive from Cape Town, if you are keen golfers we recommend Cellars Hohenort and Steenberg great hotels and closer to the courses.

Non golfers have much to enjoy in Cape Town making it the perfect base. Golfers should be aware that there is a strong wind in Cape Town for much of the year making your golf even more exciting!

Steenberg
This course is situated about 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town in the Constantia Area.

Clovelly
This course is situated in Fish Hoek on the way to Cape Point. It is about 35 minutes from Cape Town. They are a bit sticky about confirming tee times and it can take a bit of time.

Westlake
Cape Town golfers rate this golf course, it is between Muizenberg and Constantia and has the backdrop off the Ou Kaapse Weg Mountains. It is about 25 minutes from Cape Town.

Cape Winelands

There are any number of hotels in the Winelands that we recommend. These include : Mont Rochelle, Leeu House, Leeu Estates, Le Quartier Francais, La Residence, Cle De Montagne, Babylonstoren. It is only an hour from Cape Town to the golf courses of the Winelands, so you could feasibly stay in Cape Town and play these courses too. There are lots of things for non golfers to do in the area. Specifically wine tasting. It is always a little hotter and less windy in the Winelands, compared to Cape Town.

Erinvale
This course is located in Somerset West. The first nine holes and the second nine holes are vastly different. It is designed by Gary Player.

Pearl Valley
This is a well known course designed by Jack Nicklaus. It has great views of the Paarl Rock Mountains. Very pretty and beautifully designed course.

De Zalze
Golfers consider this a very pretty and playable holiday course. It even has wine tasting.

Hermanus

If you want to play Arabella  we recommend The Marine, Birkenhead House or Grootbos which are about 20 minutes drive away. Grootbos is slightly further and takes about 40 minutes. There is lots to do in the Whale Route area and of 'course' ( please excuse the pun!) the area is world famous for its whales, which come to the coastline of Walker Bay between July and October.

Arabella
This golf course is situated outside of Hermanus. Challenging course which is well designed and frequently regarded as one of the best in South Africa

Garden Route

The Garden Route is probably the best place to play golf in South Africa as the weather is so good. We highly recommend Fancourt for golfers as this allows access to the Link, Montagu and Fancourt which are regarded as 3 of the best courses in South Africa. Conrad Pezula has its own golf course. However, staying anywhere in the Knysna and George area has you about 40 minutes from the courses. Plettenberg Bay is possibly a little far out.

Fancourt Links
You can only play the Fancourt Links if you stay at Fancourt. Its designed like a UK Links Course, but with the added advantage of not having UK weather. It’s a very challenging course and probably the most famous in South Africa. Hosted the Presidents Cup.

Fancourt Montagu
You can only play the Fancourt Montagu if you stay at Fancourt. Well regarded and exceptionally good resort course which people really enjoy playing.

Fancourt Outeniqua
You can only play the Fancourt Outeniqua if you stay at Fancourt. Well regarded and exceptionally good resort course that people really enjoy playing. A very pretty course.

Pezula
The Pezula Golf Course is a “Scottish links-style" course with a similar look to that of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble beach on the Monterey coastline.

Simola
Set below the high ridges, Simola Golf Course is free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. If you were staying at Pezula this is great complimentary course to play.

Oubaai
Close to Fancourt – this a  great course to combine with a stay in the area – particularly for very keen golfers.

Pinnacle Point
The course's dramatic views, breathtaking terrain and challenging layout inspires the golfer to play this course with a high level of respect and concentration. Combine with other golf in the area.

Durban

For those golfers who have already been to Cape Town and the Garden Route, there are 3 great courses which perhaps are not as well-known as others in South Africa. We highly recommend Knighton Reeve guests stay at The Oyster Box where we always receive shining reviews and very happy guests.

Fantastic safari opportunities at Phinda Private Game Reserve and going to the Drakensberg and the Battlefields mean that you can realistically just spend an entire holiday in the Kwazulu Natal Area. Very good area for second time visits.

Durban Country Club
A very well- known course. Highly respected golf course, many golfers, believe the first five holes are fantastic. You can see and smell the Indian Ocean

Zimbali
A buggy only golf course set in an estate setting.

Mount Edgecombe
Laid out on an old sugar plantation . There are two courses.

Something different

Looking for a something unusual to spice up your golf. How about Leopard Creek near the Kruger ?

Leopard Creek
This is a beautiful golf course designed very carefully to blend in with the environment as it neighbours the Kruger. Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek for much of the water is home to hippos and the creature for which the adjacent river is named – crocodile. Getting to play at Leopard Creek is a privilege and a bit tricky and we work closely with some lodges which have
